The Government of Canada has announced $5.4 billion in new funding over two years to support affordable early learning and child care across Canada. The investment aims to help maintain reduced parent fees and support the ongoing implementation of the Canada-wide Early Learning and Child Care (CWELCC) system.
The announcement reaffirms the federal government's commitment to affordable child care and builds on previously announced extensions to federal-provincial and territorial agreements. These investments are intended to help maintain reduced parent fees, support the sustainability of the system, and provide greater certainty for families, educators, and operators moving forward.
Since the launch of the Canada-wide agreements, families across Canada have seen significant reductions in child care fees, while governments across the country continue working toward improving affordability, accessibility, inclusion, and quality within early learning and child care.
AECEA welcomes investments that strengthen Alberta's early learning and child care system and recognizes the important role that sustained public funding plays in supporting children, families, educators, and programs across the province. As the system continues to evolve, ongoing investments in the early childhood education workforce—including professional recognition, fair compensation, and supports that enable educators to thrive—will remain essential to ensuring high-quality early learning and child care for Alberta's children and families.
AECEA will continue to monitor developments related to federal and provincial early learning and child care agreements and share relevant updates with our members and the broader sector as more information becomes available.
