Under the Early Learning and Child Care Act, a licence is required to operate a child care program that provides care for 7 or more children. The act and regulation set out the minimum standards for a licensed child care program to ensure the safety, well-being and developmental needs of children are met. The Early Learning and Child Care Regulation specifies the minimum standards to be upheld by all licensed day care, group family child care, out of school care and preschool programs. These regulations include requirements such as health, safety of children, quality of care, and supervision of children.
The Family day homes standards manual for Alberta contains the standards for operating a licensed family day home agency and for the individual programs working under contract with licensed agencies to provide child care. Family day home care is one of the child care options available to parents in Alberta. Program educators that operate a family day home program can provide child care to a maximum of six children (not including their own) aged 0 to 12 years old in their private residence.
