We invite you to join us on December 11, 2025, for an AECEA Connect session to learn how lower-income families in Alberta were affected by changes to early learning and child care funding implemented by the provincial government on April 1, 2025. Conducted by The Muttart Foundation, the Association of Early Childhood Educators of Alberta and the Alberta Early Learning and Care Leaders’ Caucus, the research focused on the impacts of changes, including the implementation of flat-rate parent fees of $15 per day, the elimination of the child care subsidy program and the ability for providers to charge optional supplemental fees. With these changes, all Alberta parents now pay a minimum of $326.25 per month per child for full-time care, plus any supplemental fees, with no subsidy available to reduce fees for lower-income families for whom this rate may be unaffordable.
The webinar will share perspectives on child care access and affordability in Alberta from interviews with child care providers and lower-income families, as well as estimates of child care access and affordability based on national child care data. The main research findings highlight the significant increase in parent-paid fees for many lower-income families. Policy recommendations to support child care affordability for lower-income families, notably the reintroduction of a child care subsidy, will also be highlighted.
