The AECEA Early Childhood Educator Award of Recognition shines a light on an early childhood educator making outstanding contributions within Alberta’s early learning and child care community.
The AECEA Board of Directors is pleased to announce that Yelen Harder is the 2026 award recipient.
Yelen Harder was nominated by her consultant director, on behalf of Nugen Day Home Agency, Nelgee L. This is what Nelgee had to say about Yelen.
"At the heart of meaningful practice is the ability to build authentic, respectful, and responsive relationships. This learning story highlights how Yelen consistently fosters strong connections with children, families, and co-educators, creating an environment where everyone feels valued, heard, and supported with 15 years of childcare practice.
During daily interactions, Yelen demonstrates a deep commitment to understanding each child as an individual. Through attentive listening, observing cues, and engaging in meaningful conversations create a sense of belonging for every child. For example, when one child experienced challenging transitioning into the program, Yelen took time to build trust through consistent, gentle interactions—sitting alongside the child, acknowledging their feelings, and gradually inviting participation. Over time, the child developed confidence and began engaging more fully with other children and activities, reflecting the engaging and responsive relationship.
Yelen also prioritizes strong partnerships with families. She actively communicates through daily check-ins, sharing stories, and inviting input, ensuring that family voices are respected and incorporated into practice. One family noted how Yelen made a meaningful effort to learn about their cultural traditions and integrated these into the program, helping their child feel seen and affirmed. This approach not only strengthens trust but also enriches the learning environment for all.
Families are very satisfied with the overall care their children receive from the provider; they will very likely recommend the childcare provider to other parents. The parents rated Yelen's communication with them regarding their child’s development as excellent; they consistently describe Yelen as nurturing, patient, and deeply caring. The parents rated that they are very comfortable discussing any concerns or questions with Yelen. All parents said that Yelen offers recommendations or guidance on their child’s growth and development. Parents said Yelen’s day home is very warm and nurturing. Yelen is taking care of one child who has high needs; the parent said that the provider accommodates the need extremely well. All parents said their children’s emotional and social needs are being met. The parents said that they are very satisfied with the range of activities provided by Yelen to their children. The parents also said that they feel that their child’s learning is enhanced through the activities provided. The parents rated Yelen extremely well when handling conflicts or behavioural issues among the children. Also, the parents rated Yelen as very flexible in adjusting routines or care practices to meet their child’s changing needs.
