The Association of Early Childhood Educators of Alberta is pleased to announce that Brittany Murray is the recipient of the 2026 Flight-AECEA Living Moments of Pedagogy Award!
Brittany has worked as an early childhood educator since 2012 and has been the program supervisor at Children First: Eagle Ridge Nest in Fort McMurray since 2021. Throughout her career, she has demonstrated a deep commitment to reflective, relationship-based practice and to seeing children as capable, competent learners and citizens.
Brittany brings the principles of Flight to life through thoughtful documentation, responsive learning environments, and meaningful relationships with children, families, and educators. Her practice includes learning stories, documentation panels, living walls, anecdotal records, and floor books that invite children and educators to co-learn, co-research, and co-imagine.
She is especially passionate about creating environments that spark children’s curiosity and respond to their evolving interests and needs. Brittany encourages educators to use the “view from the door”—getting down to a child’s level and considering how the environment looks and feels through their eyes.
Brittany’s influence extends beyond her own program. She volunteers with the Fort McMurray Early Learning and Child Care Conference Committee, works with the Alberta Resource Centre for Quality Enhancement as a Coach and Pedagogical Partner, and supports other educators in reflecting deeply on their practice. She has also developed in-house professional learning that connects child development and guidance theory with reflective practice, schema theory, and Flight.
In nominating Brittany, her co-worker, Nancy, shared:
“She not only challenges herself to be reflective but also nurtures others to dig deep and reflect on their practice and relationships. She knows that at the root of all we do is a deeply trusting reciprocal relationship, and she lives that out in each and every one of her relationships.”
Brittany’s humility, curiosity, and dedication have made a meaningful difference for the children, families, educators, and communities she works alongside.
