IIFL - Understanding Loss & Grief

Event Date
Tue, Oct 3 2023, 9am - 12pm

This three-hour training will focus on identifying the various forms of loss people experience and the variability of grief responses across the human experience.  Participants will also have the opportunity to reflect on their own personal losses. In addition to gaining knowledge about loss and grief, participants will walk away with strategies to use for supporting children and adults through the grief process, such as communication and validation, therapeutic rituals, and meaning-making.

By the end of this workshop, participants will be able to:

  • Identify various forms of loss, from primary loss to ambiguous loss, to secondary and tertiary losses.
  • Explore the spectrum of grief responses, focusing on the differences among children, youth and adults.
  • Implement ways to support children, youth and adults within your existing practice as they move through the grieving process
  • Engage in developmentally appropriate responses to the grief process and support individuals in meaning-making.

We acknowledge that what we call Alberta is the traditional and ancestral territory of many peoples, presently subject to Treaties 6, 7, and 8. Namely: the Blackfoot Confederacy – Kainai, Piikani, and Siksika – the Cree, Dene, Saulteaux, Nakota Sioux, Stoney Nakoda, and the Tsuu T’ina Nation and the Métis People of Alberta. This includes the Métis Settlements and the Six Regions of the Métis Nation of Alberta within the historical Northwest Metis Homeland. We acknowledge the many First Nations, Métis and Inuit who have lived in and cared for these lands for generations. We are grateful for the traditional Knowledge Keepers and Elders who are still with us today and those who have gone before us. We make this acknowledgement as an act of reconciliation and gratitude to those whose territory we reside on or are visiting.
