SPORT for LIFE CANADA: Physical Activity & Physical Literacy in the Early Years - Sport for Life Canada

Training Description

This workshop provides early years Childhood Educators and front-line Early Childhood Education staff, supervisors, managers
an increased understanding of physical literacy development in young children (0 to 5 years) and promoting fundamental movement skills.

Participants will learn what physical literacy is and why it is important to develop in young children, understand the relationship between brain development and physical literacy and learn how relationships, environment, activities, and equipment can support physical literacy development.

This workshop was developed and designed by the content experts and physical activity & physical literacy specialists at Sport for Life Canada
Workshop registrants receive:

  • A certificate of completion from Sport for Life and Professional Development Points from the National Coaching
  • Certification Program (NCCP) for anyone that collects points with the NCCP.
  • Participant workshop material(s) provided on the Sport for Life Canada Workshop Participant Portal
  • Resources on the participant portal for early childhood educators to share with parents.

Learning Objectives

Educators will be able to:

  • Describe key concepts such as active play,
  • recognize and support fundamental movement skills (balance/manipulative/locomotor) and promote risky/adventurous play, and physical literacy.
  • Understand the critical role early years play in the future health and physical literacy of a child.
  • Identify concepts and activities that support active play in the early years.
  • Recognize educational tools and understand the important role of active play on a child’s overall development.
  • Find information that can be applied to increase the capacity of managers and staff to develop policies, practices, and environments.
